The minimum age is 21. The maximum age is 70. An underage fee of 10.00 USD per day will apply for any drivers 21-23 years of age.
All drivers must meet the same minimum age and driver’s license requirements as the renter. Any additional drivers must be present at the time of rental. An additional driver fee of 5.00 USD per day for each additional driver will apply.
At the time of rental we will request an authorization on your charge card for the estimated rental charges. An additional charge card hold, plus a deposit of 1,500.00 USD will apply.
NOTE: Credit cards without raised numbers are not accepted in Costa Rica.
Cash Rentals are not allowed. All renters must have an Avis-honored charge card to rent a vehicle.
Travel Vouchers: are accepted with an Avis-honored charge card as a guarantee.
Debit Cards: are not accepted.
Taking your vehicle outside the Country
Not applicable. Cars are not allowed outside of the country.
Waiver and Protection Options
Some credit cards provide insurance coverage, with certain limitations, as a benefit of using the card to rent vehicles. The customer is advised to contact the card issuer before the rental and get written proof of the coverage to be presented at the counter at the time of rental. Any waiver must be discussed with the location upon arrival. NOTE: Written proof should be obtained from the credit card company on official letterhead noting they will specifically extend LDW coverage in Costa Rica.
Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)
Purchase of LDW is optional. LDW relieves the renter’s financial responsibility (NWE) in case of damage to the Avis vehicle as a result from an accident or theft. Theft protection is included in the purchase of LDW. This coverage does not include the loss of license plates, accessories, tow service, fines and loss of keys nor windshield/tire/rims damage (protection for windshield/tires/rims damage may be purchased at the rental counter).
If LDW or PDW is declined, ALI will be mandatory for all car groups. PDW can only be declined with written proof of collision coverage with credit card.
Other coverages may be available at the counter, check upon arrival for information.
Addendum to Rental Agreement for US residents
At the time of rental all USA residents will be required to sign a separate addendum that acknowledges their responsibilities for care of the car and mandates that, should there be any damage issues upon return to the USA, you will deal with an American based company to handle these issues. This may alleviate the need for international trips or phone calls back to the country of origin.
Damage to people and their property
Public Liability coverage up to approximately 200,000.00 USD is included with the purchase of LDW. Property Damage (as a result of collision) coverage up to approximately 35,000.00 USD is also included. Theft of, or damage to parts and accessories are not covered. Additional protection up to 3,000,000.00 USD for public liability (ALI) as well as windshield, tires, rims and accessories protection can be purchased at the rental counter.
Additional Liability Insurance (ALI)
ALI is MANDATORY if LDW or PDW is declined. Purchase of ALI provides public liability and property damage protection above the portion not covered by the charge card company.
Partial Damage Waiver (PDW)
PDW is the minimum protection required for the Avis car in Costa Rica. It is MANDATORY, unless the customer is authorized to use credit card coverage.
Driving License and ID Requirements
A valid driver’s license from the country of residence and passport must be presented in person at the time of rental. An International Driving License is required for countries with a non-Roman alphabet. We reserve the right to check the driver’s license against Avis standards and refuse to rent if those standards are violated.
A full tank of gas is provided at the time of rental and the vehicle should be returned with a full tank of gas to avoid additional charges. There are no refunds for unused gas.
Delivery and Collection
Liberia Airport (LIR): Pick-up service is available at the Liberia airport free of charge. A pick-up notation must be in remarks on the reservation.
San Jose Airport (SJO): Shuttle will pick-up customer at airport terminal free of charge. Customer will be transferred to the Avis premises where cars are located and paperwork completed. Customer must drive the car back to the same place and be driven back to the airport.
To be guaranteed, reservations for all car groups must include the customer’s charge card number, expiration date and billing address. A No-Show fee of 75.00 USD will apply if the reservation is cancelled with less than 48 hour notice or if the customer does not rent the vehicle within 12 hours of the reserved time.
One Way Rentals
Cars can be returned to other Avis locations within the same city. No one-way fee applies. Cars can be returned to other locations in the country based on car availability. One-way fees will apply.
One-way rentals outside the country are not permitted.
Child Infant Safety Seats (CSS)
Child safety seats are available on automatic confirmation at a cost of 5.00 USD per day. An advance reservation of 24 hours is recommended.
Navigational System (GPS)
GPS is available on automatic confirmation at a cost of 9.99 USD per day. An advance reservation of 24 hours is recommended.
Wifi is available on automatic confirmation at a cost of 19.99 USD per day. An advance reservation of 24 hours is recommended.
Other products may be available, check with reservations or the location prior to arrival to request.
Vehicle Circulation Restriction: Cars cannot be driven in San Jose one day a week, based on the last digit of the license plate. However, rental vehicles are exonerated from this restriction. If a police officer stops an Avis Car, the customer must explain that the vehicle is a car rental and must present the rental agreement along with the car documents.
Meet Late Arrival: San Jose Airport (SJO) will meet flights until 2200 with request reservations. The counter will only wait 15 minutes after flight arrival. Advance reservation and flight number are required.
Terms of booking on this website
The rates on this website are often heavily discounted. This is due to our negotiated rates and bulk buying power. On very rare occasions, a rate may be displayed incorrectly due to our, or a vehicle supplier's error. In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. We make every effort to keep information on our site up to date, but we cannot guarantee this website is free of errors or omissions and retain the right to update or change the information published at any time.
To the extent permitted by law we/the owners of this website will not be liable to you or to any third party (whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage (including but not limited to any accident, injury, delay or loss of enjoyment) arising out of your reliance upon information contained on this website, including but not limited to your use (or inability to use) any products or services described or procured through this website.
When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier's rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Vehicle capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
In the event of cancellation, any deposit amounts paid at the time of booking are non-refundable.
If you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.
